Amid Fire and Ash
Every moment of every day presents an opportunity to work
towards piercing the veil of illusion, of finding the truth within the lie – an
opportunity to truly think, feel and act according to the teachings passed on
to us by the great Masters of wisdom. Initially much of this work entails
disengaging from the natural propensity to define existence – and
life – in terms of physical manifestation. Much like the mythological
phoenix which dies in a show of flames only to rise again from its ashes,
we realise that each human, or any physical being, is defined not by
its manifested aspect but by its true essence of energy or spirit.
In a universe of vibrating energy, governed by the law of
cycles, the destruction, or de-structuring of form is but a stage in the
process of transformation. It is a transitory state, a fundamental
and inextricable part of the divine creative process. In this context, end and
beginning are one and physical death ceases to denote loss of life but is seen
as a mechanism of regeneration, the apex where departing waves of
vibration withdraw and new ones enter. We, like the phoenix, are no
longer defined merely in terms of our physical vehicle, destined to burn in the
fire of friction, but by the eternal essence which lies behind the
construction, use and purpose of the form.
We are taught that, what holds true above is also true below,
and all that applies to a human being also applies to a single atom, a nation,
a civilisation, the entire human race. Likewise, while the human lifetime
constitutes the single, most monumental cycle in human experience, the process
of construction, experience, demolition and rebuilding from the remains of the
past applies indefinitely, to all forms, at all levels, on all planes. From the
great circle of evolution and involution, through to earthly life and death,
day and night, inhalation and exhalation, all the way to the rise and fall of
ideologies, religions, and civilisations, it is within the interludes
where the vibration of the departing note still echoes that the next
note of spirit will sound forth. Here, we find the most wonderful opportunity.
When we cease to resist what is, free ourselves from the paralysing identification
with physical substance and look beyond the world of appearances into the world
of meaning, we enter into a new consciousness where intelligent participation
with the forces of evolution is possible.
From the highest point within ourselves, we observe experience
turning into resolution and then again into experience, knowing that all
proceeds according to law and serves a common purpose, the true vision of which
we can only attempt to fathom. In this high place, we draw meaning from
the past, and project our highest notion of divine purpose into the future,
aligning our consciousness with the designs of the Soul.
Within
the Stillness
From the dawn chorus to the familiar sounds of community
living in the twenty-first century, outer silence can be quite rare. Considered
esoterically however, silence indicates a deep state of inner calm, distinct
from and independent of outer conditions. Being within the scope of personal
control and responsibility, this kind of subjective silence often falls prey to
the restless mind and fluid emotions which disrupt meditation and demonstrate
that, compared to outer silence, inner silence is even more elusive. The best
noise-cancelling headphones only serve as a reminder that this subjective
stillness is created within oneself.
There is then, this longing for inner quiet; but when most
outer distractions cease, as they have done for many now restricted by Covid-19
measures, the interior noises of the inner psyche may become more prominent,
revealing unresolved conflicts and the wounds that are yet to heal. Along with
much else that has been successfully submerged by busy life patterns, this
uprising presents a crisis and a challenge. At the same time, such revelations
provide an opportunity for a conscious evaluation. Through addressing what has
been discovered, it is possible to change the dynamics and move towards the
creation of greater inner calm.
One expression of a deep inner silence is the capacity to
listen with an aligned and unwavering receptivity, focused on the energy and
content of the message being conveyed. This poise creates a non-judgemental
space for enlightened goodwill to enter and it prepares a time for both
assimilation and the formulation of an appropriate response. Within a religious
context, this same stillness might be described in terms of faith and
communication in prayer. Mother Teresa once spoke of this kind of silence when
she was asked what she did when she prayed. She answered that she
listened. Then, being asked what God did when she prayed, she replied that He
listened.
Such profound inner quiet as this, and that which is
needed for meditation, is eventually established through persistence and by
patiently dismissing wayward thoughts and emotional interference. When such inner
calm is achieved, even fleetingly, a profound stillness can reveal itself. This
space is not lifelessly empty, and when the meditation is aligned and
appropriately directed, it is akin to magnetism. Finely attuned, it attracts a
certain level of vibration favourable to the level of meditation and
contemplation that is evolutionary in nature. This state of consciousness is a
portal for abstract perception and spiritual communication unbounded by words
and perhaps most easily expressed in the energies of light and love. These same
energies are those that the Triangles meditations circulate in service to
humanity.
In
Perpetuum Mobile
The term “creation”, when applied to the manifested world,
errs to the extent that it suggests something static, inert, unmoving, or
final. The myriad forms of which the manifested world is composed are in a
constant state of motion, growth, and evolution. As the indwelling life cycles
into and out of phenomenal expression, there is death and rebirth,
accumulation and dissolution. All lives, all forms onward move towards their
destined consummation in a dynamic dance of magnetic, fiery interrelationship.
Where is this dance taking us? Towards the exaltation of
the soul which lies hid within all forms. Its
exaltation fulfills divine intent—that Will which is the engine of
evolution. We are told that naught exists but consciousness, for all life
stands in measured grades embodying an ever-perfecting relationship between
spirit and form. It is this process of perfection—fiery, intense, and
sobering—which frees the imprisoned life and allows the soul to triumph as the
creator and master of its form.
Through countless cycles, the consciousness emerges from
the darkness of form life into the lighted recognition of its spiritual nature.
This emergence of the personality into soul consciousness is the preeminent
creative act of the soul in our planetary cycle. Through trial and error,
defeat and triumph, the soul always persists—its original intent inevitably
consummated. The soul knows that time, when rightly handled, becomes an agent
of creative beauty rather than a limiting factor in the creative process.
Time perfects all things through cyclic repetition and
through an enforced dissolution, preparing the way for renewed growth and
activity. The soul understands time as immortality, yet works within
cycles of activity and inactivity (pralaya). The lower interlude of the
spiritual year is naturally a time of introspection, recollection, and
planning. Growth and evolution follow and, with poise, the right
relationships are established between oneself and one’s environment, between
the soul and its mechanism.
In this state, the soul impresses its vision upon the mind
of the personality, revealing the divine potential hidden within the present.
Once bestowed, this vision impels us to point the way, to uplift and restore
humanity’s faith in the future. This opportunity to
serve evokes the soul quality of joy. Joy clarifies and vitalizes. It
is realized in the mind and supervenes when right alignment has been achieved.
It continues to expand as group consciousness is realized, when one’s actions
are selfless and non-acquisitive, and when desire for personal comfort fades in
the realization of spiritual service. The soul delights in the perpetual motion
of creation and re-creation with inexhaustible love, mobilizing goodwill and
drawing all things upwards.
