The Fires of Purification
“Call for the fire, oh pilgrim in a strange and
foreign land”, so says the Old Commentary, in A Treatise on White Magic.
We carry this instruction as if we understand
it. As if fire is something we summon, something that arrives and leaves us
transformed. We have been told to call for it. We have perhaps even done so.
And yet when it comes, we discover that what we summoned was larger than what
we imagined.
We come to the Path carrying ambitions, subtle
ones. The ambition to expand, awaken, become. And the Path, for a long time,
seems to offer exactly this. We grow. We learn. We build what we call spiritual
life.
And then the fire comes.
What the fires consume is not what we have
neglected, but what we have achieved. What brought us here cannot carry us
further. The fire strikes precisely at what we have built most carefully. At a
certain point, even spiritual achievement becomes a limitation.
Initiation is simplification.
The purifying fires simplify by destroying,
leaving only the essence needed for the next step, until that too is offered to
the flame.
Every disciple creates his own burning-ground.
He stands within it, does not escape it. He simply remains, until the sense of
separate selfhood loosens its hold. It is this, and only this, that makes
genuine group life possible.
But the fires of the group life burn something
the individual flame cannot reach. That certainty that our spiritual life is
ours alone, the last and most subtle vesture we wear, woven from genuine aspiration,
from years of real work, and for that reason, our most cherished. In the fires
of the group life, this too becomes fuel.
The consuming fire and that which it reveals
are not two things. They never were. For God is Love, and God is a consuming
Fire.
Humanity itself is passing today through the
fires that precede the gate of initiation. The same law holds. The purifying
fires moving through the world, through its conflicts, its disintegrations, its
loss of old certainties, these are the fires of a civilisation being stripped
of what it can no longer carry into the coming age.
Let the fires of the group life destroy the
veil hiding the Father’s Face.
And when the veil falls, there is no
revelation. Only recognition.
That Face was never absent.
Never far.
Never hidden from us.
We ourselves are the veil… the sheaths and
glamours we built on our way to remembering who we really are, hiding the inner
sun… our true identity.
The same sun.
Hidden in each human being.
In each nation.
In each civilisation.
