ENERGIES OF THE AQUARIUS
[...] In this meditation we reflect onhow the Aquarian
energies can be expressed
for the good of humanity. Let us therefore ponder about some practical
aspects of this air sign with its symbol of the Water Bearer,
carrying the
keynote: water of
life am I, poured forth for thirsty men.
Aquarius is depicted as a man holding an inverted vase. Out of it, he pours the water of life. This
water, in the esoteric sense, is drawn
from the ever-flowing river of
life, that is,
the river of light and love.
But, as Alice Bailey states:
‘These two words, life and love,
are the two words
that embody the technique
of
the Aquarian age; not form, not mind, but life and love.
Two words we use constantly but which, back of them, do not
bear any adequate concept.’1
But what is clear, is that
Aquarius represents the server, and
the word ‘service’ has the needs of others implicit in its
meaning. The energy of Aquarius stimulates our capacity to serve
our fellowmen, to recognise their needs, and to share
our own resources freely and fully, without expecting any rewards.
Furthermore, central in the life of a
server is the beauty of group
life and group service.
Aquarius’ influence
is greatly needed, right now, in a
world where humanity seems to
have frozen into materialism and
individualism and where we are facing so many existential crises
as a result.
But how do we
recognise the actual needs of our
fellowmen? What is it that they are thirsty for? Do men always have to indicate
their thirst before we can serve them, or do they sometimes
express it in hidden
ways?
Perhaps we
can ponder on the meaning of the ‘water of life’. Whereas
the concepts of life and
love, as yet, indeed can be rather unclear,
the concept of water has
a tangible meaning. When a man has just
crossed
the desert and his water flask is empty,
his thirst obviously must first be quenched
by material water and not by reflections on love and
life. Yet, the act
of offering the water is a life bringing act of love. The
water of life can take
many forms, whereas the
act of pouring it out must always be an act of love and
service.
This is beautifully demonstrated
in the Gospel of John2, where we are told that Jesus, granting his
mother’s request to provide
wine at a wedding-party, performed
his ‘first’ miracle and turned the water in six stone pots into wine for
the guests to enjoy. John tells us that this ‘was the first of the
signs through which He revealed his glory.’ We might wonder: of all the
miracles Jesus could have done, why did He
make this the first
public display
of His power? Why do not something, frankly, more meaningful? Following dozens
of ceremonial hand washings
in these pots, they were not the ones which you would
want to take a drink from. But Jesus
turned these murky waters
into the finest wine of
the night. And with that act He sent us the profound message that He had the power to change the
very nature of things:
not just of liquids, but of lives. And, if we choose to follow his ways and become servers and ultimately ‘the water of life’ ourselves, we can do the same thing.
Alice Bailey’s interpretation of the task
of Hercules in Aquarius, to clean the Augean stables, is also a
beautiful demonstration of this. The
story tells us that there was an enormous
amount of accumulated
dung and life-threatening filth in
the royal stables of King Augeas. Hercules
succeeded only because he first broke down the walls
of the stable and then
redirected the rivers of life and
love, letting them run right through, transforming all filth. But the King
did not acknowledge
Hercules’ achievement and withheld the promised
reward. However,
Hercules seemed not troubled
by this apparent injustice.
How utterly relevant,
at this time, where we are faced with the
problems of pollution, causing diseases
and death, and with the problems of outdated thought forms concerning justice.
We are confronted with both material
pollution, and
with the signs of the unconscious thirst of humanity:
despair, loneliness, feelings
of rejection, resulting in anger, populism and
violence. These signs often come from those who
feel treated unjustly,
such as the farmers all over
the world, the manual labourers, the
socially and economically less fortunate, ethnic
minorities etc. etc.
Clearly, as servers, we need to clean up. We need to break down some walls:
– Firstly, the walls of the heart,
that is, indifference
and the suppression of the unbearable. Looking upon sufferings and injustices, we should not allow ourselves to get lost in an old river of emotions. Although frightening and upsetting, it will not break our
heart to look at the reality in Gaza, in Ukraine, and so many other
places. Rather, it will
break the walls around our heart to be never
built back again.
– Secondly, the walls around the outdated thoughtform of justice, as justified indignation and
the triumph of revenge.
Justice is an evolving moral concept that bears no universal definition, despite
the agreed notion that everyone
should be given what they deserve. The
meaning of justice changes according to differing
cultures and circumstances. In the
Aquarian Age, justice must be given, not demanded. Justice
is not a human right to be received, but a hope and an
anti-power, functioning through groups, such
as the
New Group of World Servers, and international institutions, such as
the
International Court of Justice.
And yes, there
are great signs of
hope right now. Hope, not in the sense that all our desires will be satisfied, but hope in the
sense of faith,
that is, the trust that there
is an underlying truth and
glory to all
life, which will increasingly manifest itself.
The recent, almost unanimous, verdict of the International Court of Justice, that, under all circumstances, ‘the
avoiding of the
possibility of genocide must be law’ is
important, because this is a first sign that to inflict human
suffering on a large scale,
risking the possibility of genocide,
is no longer to be tolerated
by the general public.
And, as Alice
Bailey states: ‘The breaking down of barriers on a large and practical scale has to be
brought about by public opinion.’3
Now, before we begin our
meditation, let us
focus once more on the spirit
of Aquarius, the
mindful water bearer, a spirit of non-separation and all-inclusiveness.
Of justice and love, and, as
Alice Bailey puts it, of:
‘the drawing out of every human being we meet
the best that is in them.’
Then, and only then,
‘when we have broken
down the barriers of separativeness, then
we let in the two
rivers, the water of life and the
river of love.’ 4
